Designate A Captain Program

The Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance and the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau, in conjunction with the Water Safety Council, were pleased to introduce the year-round "Designate A Captain" Program. The Spring Kick-Off Program commenced at the Eleventh Annual Spring Harbor Hop on May 3, 2008.

Deaths on Lake of the Ozarks
(Camden, Miller and Morgan Counties) in 2008:

Capt. Matt Walz with the Missouri State Water Patrol has provided the following information:
1. Boating Fatality – a man with no life jacket drowned while attempting to help his grandson who had fallen overboard.
2. Drowning – 9 year old boy with no life jacket trapped inside a helicopter which crashed into the water.
3. Boating Fatality – Passenger on a rental personal watercraft killed upon impact when another rental personal watercraft (driven by a friend) ran into the back of it. All parties were wearing life jackets.
4. Drowning – Older adult without life jacket drowned (probably due to health reasons) – possibly fell off dock or seawall.
5. Drowning – Older adult without life jacket drowned (probably due to health reasons) – possibly fell off dock or seawall.
6. Drowning – 18 year old male without life jacket drowned while swimming off a pontoon boat.
7. Drowning – 18 year old male without life jacket drowned while trying to swim across a small cove.
8. Boating Fatality – Man without life jacket drowned after falling off the back of a boat (alcohol related/.18+ bac level).
9. Drowning - Man without life jacket drowned after diving in lake off a pontoon boat (alcohol related/.18+ bac level).
10. Drowning – Man found floating with life jacket on near personal watercraft drifting. Cause of death was determined to be drowning although health issues may have been a contributing factor (un-witnessed/alcohol related/.10 bac level).
11. Drowning – Woman found floating with no life jacket (pontoon boat found adrift with her dog in same general vicinity). Incident was un-witnessed, but presumed to be a drowning (alcohol possibly related pending toxicology results).
